So, it's been a year since the iPad was announced. Where are all the iPad "killers?"
First of all, there is more to being an "iPad killer" than just how it works, looks feels. Apple will be the only serious player at the $499 price point because they have the cash to buy up all the flash storage capacity. Every other competitor will be paying more for the same parts and that will be their downfall. Call it business, but's it's also reality.
Secondly, the iPad has the app store with thousands of apps and hundreds of thousands of iPhone apps that will run on it. No one else has this. Android might, but their apps are all over the place and they are not made for one type of form factor nor one OS version.
Lastly, who will make all the money? Apple. They will make the vast majority of profits because they control the OS, the app store and the manufacturing. Google is making very little compared to Apple by giving away their OS. Not sure what business model they think will change that fact. And just like MSFT they will have to rely on a third party to produce the devices. They will all compete for market share just like HP/Dell/Lenovo does with PCs, reducing margins, and profits. The Mac has less than 10% market share yet they trounce those companies with their margins. That's why Apple will soon be the most valuable company on the planet.
Good luck with the "iPad killer" nonsense.
